Hi,

A quick hello from me - a new poster. Been lurking around for a while so took the plunge and signed up for 2010!

I currently have this website available covering as much of the battle at isandlwana in photographs - as I could. Hope this is of use to the forum.

Jamie. Welcome to the forum.
That is one excellent website. Brilliant photography. I’m sure your site will be more than helpful in many of our forth-coming discussions. Can I ask how many times have you been to SA? As it must have taken some time to photograph the areas you have.

Jamie, greetings from KwaZulu-Natal. I must compliment you on your comprehensive description of the events that took place at Isandlwana and the constructive manner in which you have mentioned a couple of recent new interpretations of the Zulu deployment taking place.
I do hope you won't mind if I point out a glitch in the labelling of Section 3 of The Battle, in which you list the Natal Carbineers' monument as one to the NNH (photos 4a and 4b of 6). They were two very distinct Units. The Natal Native Horse were formed in 1866 from five groups of Blacks living in colonial Natal.They actually volunteered for service and their ranks were filled successively by fathers and sons. As far as I am aware, they ceased to exist after the Bhambatha (Poll Tax) Rebellion of 1906). The Natal Carbineers (which are still in existence as a Reserve Force Regiment in the South African National Defence Force) (the equivalent of your Territorials) were a statutory Natal Colonial Regiment. Incidentally, their ranks are now filled almost entirely Zulu speaking soldiers, many of whose forefathers fought against the Regiment in 1873, 1879 and 1906.
I would agree that the Natal Native Contingent (NNC) could be described as being an Irregular Regiment whose combat value was not very effective.

Great website, I look at it regulary, a couple of questions for you if I may:-

Did you achieve all those photos over a period of days, from one single trip ? if so, that must have been quite an excursion.
Also were you able to wander freely to take the photos wherever you chose, or did you you require permission from any of the areas that you took the photos ?

Hi,

Had two trips to Isandlwana for 7 and 10 days each. Not long enough......but had the wife with me who was a little bored of sunbathing all day.

I was indeed able to walk around but took advice from several people on what to watch for and where to go. There are a few snakes lying in wait in the long grass!! I hired a 4 x 4 though as a normal car will probably belly up on some of the roads leading to the locations in question like Mangeni, Mabaso etc. I was fortunate to take advise from Rob Gerrard at Isandlwana Lodge who know's who to ask and where to go. The guy is a legend.

My advice would also include respecting the local population and try to minimise any disruption or inconveniece to them whilst walking about. After all it is the community. Take advise on the weather because when it rains - it rains !! Shocked

Don't get caught out on the plains or the hillsides in the rain!!

Fugitives Trail is tough due to the plant & tree growth and not easy to follow leading to and after crossing the Manzimnyama Stream in particular. Check with Fugitives Lodge also just to let them know you are walking the trail and are on their land.
