| Hello, Can anyone help? I am trying to research 1504, Sergeant Patrick Joseph Buckley who served with 1/13th at Kambula and Ulundi and noticed a photo of his grave posted on this site posted in 2010. What is more intriguing is that it had a photo of Patrick inset in the top right corner? Does anyone have this photo, and any information about Patrick? Many thanks, Paul |

| Hello Paul,
I took the photo of the grave in Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bristol, but the photo of Sgt. Buckley came from the 'Keynsham Light Horse' - forum member Rai England is a member of the KLH so he may be able to help with this (from memory, the original is of a family group).
Regards,
Tim |

| Hello Paul,
'The Keynsham Light Horse' had a fantastic website some years ago recording hundreds of Anglo-Zulu War graves including that of Patrick Buckley - they also brought out a publication called 'But Burdens Shouldered' (Tim Day) which included details of a few of these memorials. Buckley was included, & so I paid a visit using the information to take a photo.
Here's some additional info which may be of interest;
PATRICK JOSEPH BUCKLEY 1504, Lance Corporal, 1/13th Light Infantry
Born: Cork, Ireland c.1849 Married: Ann Murphy, 18th Oct 1879 Service: Attesting in Jan 1867 he served in Gibraltar, Malta & South Africa before being discharged in 1896. Zulu War: Present at Khambula & Ulundi Died: 12th July 1926 at 207 Clarence Rd, Bedminster, Bristol Buried: Holy Souls RC Cemetery, Arnos Vale, Bath Rd, Bristol.
Regards,
Tim |

| A couple more documents. First the 1901 census which shows Patrick and family in Bristol. He is 51 and a Pensioner Recruiting Sergeant. He would have been payed Two Shillings and Sixpence by the army for each recruit - nice little earner. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Then the 1911 census. Still in Bristol and now an Army Pensioner and Lodging House Keeper. Note that he and Ann had ten children, eight of whom survived. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]All the best. Steve |

| Hi Steve,
I just wanted to thank you for posting the census and for the information. I am truly grateful. It is quite extraordinary how much you can learn in a few days by asking the right people.
