HUGH ROWLANDS (Brevet Major, Now General, K.C.B, C.B.)

"HUGH ROWLANDS (Brevet Major, Now General, K.C.B, C.B.) 41st Regiment The Royal Welsh Regiment. Decorated for gallant conduct on November 5th 1854, in saving the life of Colonel Hely of the 47th Regiment, who was wounded and surrounded by Russian soldiers. Also at Inkerman, at the commencement of the great battle, his bravery was most conspicuous. By his exertions and courageous leading, the advanced picket held the ground they had occupied, against the attack of the enemy. Born in 1829, Sir Hugh Rowlands entered the army in 1849. For his services in the Crimean War, besides the decoration of the Victoria Cross, he received his Brevet-Majority, 5th Class Medjidie, and Turkish Medal, and was created Knight of the Legion of Honour. Served in the Kaffir and Zulu Wars, 1877-9, being mentioned in despatches; from 1884-9 was in command of a 1st class district in India, and from 1893-6 commanded the Scottish District."

This piece originally appeared in 'The History of the Victoria Cross' by Philip A. Wilkins published in 1904. However where you have found have made a boob over the regiment's title the 41st did not become a 'Royal' Regiment until the 11th June 1969 when they amalgamated with the South Wales Borderers to become the Royal Regiment of Wales. Which in turn amalgamated with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers to form The Royal Welsh on Saint David's Day 2006.

Hugh Rowlands won the VC in the Crimea whilst he was a captain in the 41st Welch Regiment. On 5th Nov 1854, at Inkerman, he rescued the colonel of the 47th Lancashire Regiment who had been wounded and surrounded by Russian soldiers. He also acted with great gallantry in holding the ground occupied by his advance picquet against the enemy at the beginning of the battle.
Hugh was born on 6th May 1828 at Llanrug, Caernarvonshire and entered the army as an ensign in the 41st in 1849. He served with his regiment in the Crimean War and became their Commanding Officer in March 1866. In May 1875 he exchanged to the 34th which he commanded until June 1878 when he left the regiment. He went on special service in South Africa in 1879 where he commanded no.5 Column of Lord Chelmsford's first invasion of Zululand.

He reached the rank of General and held several important posts; QMG in 1880, Commander of 1st class District, India 1884-89, Lieutenant of the Tower of London 1893, Commander of Scottish District 1893-96. He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur and the KCB. He died in Llanrug on 1st August 1909.
