Admin, sorry to bother you again, but I'm curious as to how I can add a quotation that will appear at the bottom of each of my posts, like other members ? If possible, would it be alright to ask if you could please add this quotation to mine ? -

"P.S. - I am 'down', because I'm left behind, but we shall see."

I'd appreciate your help in accomplishing this addition.

Thankyou.

I'd need to look more accurate info in my book, but it is at the end of a letter by Col. Durnford to his mother, written on the 21st January at Rorke's Drift, just before he rode into history the next day.

'Or is it self inflicted ?' I guess it could also mean me sometimes, as I always seem to be trying to catch up !

Tasker, unlike Col. Durnford, I don't see myself riding into history any time soon. Wink

nice idea

and Colin, i wonder if Durnford would have stayed "left behind" at RD and not be "down" about it, if he could turn back time?

Tasker, as events at Isandhlwana were already ongoing before his arrival there, and he was not actually the cause, I don't think he would have missed it for one moment, even if he could turn back time, as I think he still would have went, though knowing it'd lead to his own death - 'facing fearful odds'.

Colin, I would love to say it was one of mine, but like trying to write a good song lyric, it is never going to happen for me in this lifetime.

This is a poem by Leo Marks who worked for the SOE in WW2. (Many young service men write it to their girlfriends / fiancees pretending these are their words. Several years later when the first flush of love has waned and the missus hears the same words on the radio, hubby comes home to a frosty reception). But seriously, it is a beautiful poem that many soldiers, sailors and airmen dedicate to their partners because I think it says it all. I have heard it read at many weddings and funerals and it gets me every time!
