| 60thRifleman Welcome to the forum. Joseph Salter was born at Malmesbury, Wiltshire, and enlisted for the 60th Foot at Reading on 28 September 1877, aged 18. He served overseas with the 3rd K.R.R.C. in Natal, February 1879 to December 1881; in Egypt, September 1882 to August 1884; in Cyprus, September 1884 to June 1886; and at Gibraltar, June 1886 to October 1889. He then transferred to the 7th K.R.R.C. as Sergeant from October 1889 to 3 August 1895, when he was discharged medically unfit. His Medals were sold in December 2008 for £580. | Hi. I'm new to this group. As a child growing up I can remember my grandmother having a medal from the Zulu wars which was a relative of ours (our family name is Smith). The medal bore the name of the recipient to be Salter. I don't know for sure of his first name. My grandmother lived in Risca (near Newport, Gwent). We don't know of the current whereabouts of the medal as it was passed to the 'other side' of the family. Are there any records I could check for more info, or does anyone know of it's current whereabouts. Thanks. |
